Emergent Literacy Design: Vrooming Vacuum Cleaner with Letter V

Katlin Garrett

Rationale: This lesson will help children identify /v/, the phoneme represented by V. Students will learn to recognize /v/ in spoken words by learning a sound analogy (Vacuuming the floor) and the letter symbol V, practice finding /v/ in words, and apply phoneme awareness with /v/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters.

Materials: Computer, projector, wifi Primary paper and pencil; chart with "Veronica played her violin very vile."; drawing paper, scissors, glue and crayons, There Was An Old Lady Swallowed The ABCs (Lucille Colandro) Youtube video; word cards with VOW, LOVE, VENT, LAKE, ROCK, and VOTE; assessment worksheet identifying pictures with /v/ (URL below).d

Procedures:1. Say: Today we are going to work on spotting the movement of our mouth when saying /v/ sound. We spell /v/ with letter V. V looks like a upside down volcano or a two-finger peace sign, and /v/ sounds like a vacuum cleaner or a fast car revving its engine (vroom vroom).

Let's pretend to vacuum the floor, /v/, /v/, /v/. [Pretend to be vacuuming the floor] Notice where your top teeth are? (Touching the top of your bottom lip slightly biting it). When we say /v/, blow air between top teeth and the top lower lip while keeping your top teeth on the top of your bottom lip to vibrate the /v/. Teacher will play “ How to say the V sound by Peachie Speechie:” on youtube.

Let me show you how to find /v/ in the word cove. I'm going to stretch cove out in super slow motion and listen for my vacuum. Ccc-O-v Slower Ccc-O-O-O-v-v There it was! I felt my teeth touch my lip bottom lip in a slight biting motion and blow air on the top of the bottom lip. Finger Peace sign /v/ is in cove.

Let's try a tongue tickler [on chart]. There was a woman by the name of Veronica. She loved music very much. She decided that she wanted to buy an instrument to play. Veronica took a trip to the music shop. Veronica decided to buy herself a violin. She was going to teach herself to play. Here’s our tickler: "Veronica played her violin very vile." Everybody say it three times together. Now say it again, and this time, stretch the /v/ at the beginning of the words. "Vvveronica played her vvvolin vvvery vvvile." Try it again, and this time break it off the word: "/v/ eronica /v/ olin /v/ ery /v/ ile

Call on students to answer and tell how they knew: Do you hear /v/ in Sun or Van? Love or Vain? Von or Top? Vote or drop? Cave or Take? Say: Let's see if you can spot the mouth move /V/ in some words vacuum your floor /v/: Sun, Vinny, Violin, Car, Vary, Vase, be, hat, Lava, Volcano

Say: "Let's look at There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed the ABC’s”. Lucille Colandro tells us about an Old lady who eats her way through the alphabet!" Read page 24, drawing out /v/. Ask children if they can think of other words with /v/. Ask them to make up a silly sentence using words that start with /v/ like Vvv-iolin, Vvv -ase, or Vvv-alentine. Then have each student write their silly sentence with invented spelling and draw a picture of their silly sentence. Display their work. Teacher will play Write the letter V | Alphabet Writing lesson for children | The Singing Walrus on youtube

Show VOW and model how to decide if it is Vow or Hot: The V tells me to vacuum the floor, /v/, so this word is vvv-ow, vow. You try some: Vase: Love or Vase? Meat: Meat or Vent? Volt: Lake or Volt? Very: Very or Rock? Work: Work or Vote?

For assessment, distribute the worksheet with the cut outs that match in the boxes chart on it..  Students will color the pictures that begin with V, cut and paste them in the boxes. Call students individually to read the phonetic cue words.

Instructor will wrap lesson up with playing “ The Letter V Song” By ABCmouse.com on youtube
